Don't let ANYONE ever tell you that L-O-V-E has NOTHING to do with sports. You've probably heard that they're about money and power and success and fame. But it's also about LOVE.

Here's what you should chat up today.

+ NBA superstar Kevin Durant loves the game of basketball.

+ Rucker Park in NY is where some of the best players in the world have converged to play ball over the years. Some have never made it to the NBA but they LOVE the game and they are AMAZING.

+ If you didn't know it, NBA players are locked out.

+ The players and league are so far apart in negotiations right now, some players are talking about going to play overseas. Kobe in Turkey? Chris Paul in Beijing? Durant in NY? WHAT?

+ Last night, Kevin Durant played at Rucker Park.

+ The result was flat out phenomenal. Poetic. Fun. LOVE-ly.

+ He played for the love of the game. For the opportunity. For the fans. For himself.

+ He made zero $$ last night but oh, wasn't he rich? And the crowd and me are richer for it.

+ After watching this, may be you feel that way too.

College Hoops Championships

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening,

College basketball is on my brain. The men's NCAA Basketball Championship Game is tonight. The women's is tomorrow night. Here's what you can chat up:

Men's

> It's Butler vs. UConn (University of Connecticut)

> Both teams weren't expected to make it this far and that's the beauty of the tournament. Anything can and will happen.

> Butler was in the championship game last year, which was also an improbable appearance. They nearly beat Duke on a last second shot.

> At one point, Butler lost 5 of 6 games in the Horizon League, which is usually not considered the toughest league in college basketball. No offense but the ACC, Big Ten and Big East are ranked higher.

> UConn has been to the big dance (= final ) before and has won.

> They have an experienced coach in Jim Calhoun.

Here is where it's personal, for me.

> This is sort of a David (Butler) vs. Goliath (UConn) and I'm pulling for the little guy. Why?

> I like the way Butler plays -- as a team and in the system that their coach designed.

> They never give up.

> They play tough, old school, Indiana style basketball. That means defense and offense.

> No one player is more important than the other. In fact, with one of their best players on the bench Saturday, they pulled away from VCU.

> I like miracles. I believe in them.

Which, leads me to the women's championship game.

> Notre Dame pulled off a HUGE upset last night, beating the women of UConn.

> Not only was UConn the defending national champs but they had the best player in the country, Maya Moore. She's won the Wade Trophy three consecutive times. It's the equivalent of winning the Heisman Trophy three straight years.

> ND kept its poise, scored when they had to and shut down UConn when they needed to.

> It was...miraculous.

Amazing how income tax time can knock me off my game! All those papers, all the faxing, etc.

Well, the BBQ is back on with a plateful of topics, starting with the NFL lock-out. Here's what you can chat about:

> Will there be a NFL football season in 2011? The players have been officially locked out.

> Why? The players and the team owners are at an impasse. Some of the many issues involved: an 18-game season instead of 16 and how to divide (allegedly) $9B a year.

> The NFL players union has voted to decertify and has filed an anti-trust suit in federal court.

> Who's right? Who's wrong? Discuss.

Ohio State Football

> Head coach Jim Tressel has been suspended for 2 games because he was warned that some of his football players were selling their memorabilia. Tressel reportedly received an email from a former OSU player who is now an attorney. Tressel responded that he'd look into it ASAP but apparently didn't.

> When the players were found out, including star QB Terrelle Pryor they were suspended for

the first 5 games of the upcoming season.

> Now Tressel is suspended for the first two.

> Should he have been punished? If so, should it have been more severe?

> In a news conference, Tressel said he thought the email was supposed to be kept confidential. Is that a defense?

> Did you ever see this coming? Tressel's known as a class-act.

> I wonder how Don Mattingly, the manager of the LA Dodgers, is going to do in his first year at the helm. He spent years as the #2 guy to Joe Torre at the Yankees and then the Dodgers.

> Mattingly was a Yankee and a good ball player in his day. He hit well and fielded well and was a team guy. He probably won't make the Hall of Fame but he knows the game.

> But it's quite a different thing between knowing the game and being a good bench boss.

> How will players respond to him? What will his style be? How does he motivate his players?

> Do ex-players make great managers?

Reggie Miller - Not on HOF Ballot?

Reggie Miller, the legendary Indiana Pacers forward whose clutch shooting took the Pacers to new heights, is apparently not on the NBA Hall of Fame ballot.

> The former UCLA star was MONEY at hitting last second shots, making mind-twisting 3 pointers and had the ability to get free (i.e. break away from tight defense) in order to get the shot off.

> He was a particularly deadly marksman when he played the NY Knicks in the 90's, often nailing a 3-pointer and then jawing with filmmaker Spike Lee, a die-hard Knicks fan who sat in the front row.

> Miller played his entire career with the Pacers -- who does that any more?

> Finally, the numbers: made 2506 3-point shots, averaged nearly 20 points a game, and according to the NYTimes, 3-times led the league in free throw percentages.

> If he's not on the ballot, why not?

> Why should he -- or shouldn't he?

Baseball: Spring Training Basics

Good morning!

Can you feel it? Close your eyes and just imagine the smell of freshly cut grass, the feel of the dirt beneath your cleats, the "pop" sound of a baseball hitting the sweet spot in your glove. OK, maybe it's just me but I'm excited because it's spring training and pitchers and catchers have reported, which means that baseball is just around the corner!

Here's what you can chat up:

> Just like there are two leagues in baseball: The American League and the National League, there are two spring training leagues.

> The Grapefruit League - this is based in Florida (hence the name). Teams like the Yankees, Orioles, Astros, the Mets, the Twins, Red Sox, Cardinals and Pirates spend spring training in various locations and travel to play spring games against each other.

> Notice that National League AND American League teams play each other. In other words, spring training is not "League Specific" like the regular season.

> Then there's the Cactus League - this is based in Arizona, thus the name. This is where the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, the Giants, San Diego, Los Angeles, Kansas City, the Rockies -- among others -- play.

> Mention the two leagues, ask which pitchers are looking good and will they pull their weight this year and you've got an entire sports conversation sewn up!

RIP Chuck Tanner

Friends,

Since spring training is just around the corner, it's appropriate to give a hat tip to Chuck Tanner, former manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who died yesterday.

Beyond the obvious, why should you care?

> Tanner took a Pirates team into the World Series in 1979 and promptly fell behind 3 games to 1. Remember, in baseball, the World Series is the best of 7. So they're 1 loss away from elimination.

> Tanner refused to fold and, more importantly, refused to let his team fold.

> With a line-up including Willie Stargell, Dave Parker and Bert Blyleven, the miracle Pirates fought back to win. And Tanner did it despite his mother dying during the World Series.

> Chuck Tanner was old school. His policy of never giving in was infectious and help will his players to win.

> p.s. Remember the Sister Sledge song, "We Are Family"? That became the theme song of the Pirates. Yes, it was played ad nauseum but, in the end, it was true.

Super Bowl - 2011

Good Morning!

I'm writing from the frozen tundra of Chicago where my internet presence has been a bit spotty so my apologies.

So, this weekend is the Super Bowl in Dallas. Here's what you can chat up:

> the Pittsburgh Steelers will take on the Green Bay Packers. These are two storied and "smaller" town franchises. They reek of tradition and legend.

> 2 great quarterbacks: Ben Roethlisberger for 'burgh, Aaron Rodgers for the Packers. The edge may have to go to Roethlisberger because he's already won two Super Bowl rings.

> However, Rodgers has been playing like a champ. He has good footwork, is willing to opt for the short pass (gains of 6, 7, 8 yards) instead of forcing the risky long bomb pass down field. As a result, the Packers have been consistent.

> The Packers also have had a HUGE number of players lost to injury this season, yet they keep winning.

> Pittsburgh knows about loss: their QB Roethlisberger didn't play for the first 4 games of the season b/c of legal issues off the field and the Commissioner suspended him. Now that Ben is back, they've been playing well. It doesn't mean that Roethlisberger hasn't still been the target of some comments.

> Let's talk defense because both teams have great defensive coordinators and star players. First, Dick LeBeau of the Steelers is a master of shutting teams down. He'll have his work cut out for him against the Packers. Look for Troy Polamalu (paw-la-MALL-ooh), (he of the long flowing hair) who is the emotional heart of the franchise, to be in the middle of the action throughout the game.

> Dom Capers leads the Green Bay defense and their star is Clay Matthews. BTW, also wears long golden locks. Matthews is just the latest in a family line of NFL warriors. He's fast, strong and when he hits, players feel it into the next week. Capers has also developed different looks and schemes for teams this season that have just left teams absolutely confused.

> Finally, something to watch for. Aaron Rodgers has suffered 2 concussions this season. Not good. If by chance he suffers one in the game this Sunday, he'll be out so his offensive line is going to have to show up BIG this weekend.

AFC and NFC Champions. Bears Down, Pittsburgh's Bound

Hello friends,

Sorry for the post-lunch edition. Let's get right to what you can chat about:

> First the NFC Championship, Chicago Bears vs. the Green Bay Packers. This was a story of two halves, 3 Bears quarterbacks and Green Bay's ability to persevere.

> Green Bay beat the Bears on their home turf.

> They came out and QB Aaron Rodgers stunned the crowd by having the Packers in the end zone within the first 6 minutes.

> On the other side of the ball, Bear's QB Jay Cutler was hurt and pulled from the game. Back up Todd Collins was ineffective but, surprise! Caleb Hanie, the Bear's 3rd string QB, came in in the 3rd quarter nearly pulled off an upset! His interception in the 4th quarter ended the comeback though.

> The question that's floating around today is whether Jay Cutler was hurt badly enough and couldn't re-enter the game. Throw that out topic out and you'll have plenty to talk about besides Hanie, Rodgers and rest.

Now to the AFC with Pittsburgh taking on the hot NY Jets.

> Pittsburgh beat the Jets last night in the 'burgh but this too was a game of halves. The Steelers scored all of their points in the first half, holding the Jets to just 3. The Jets really started to move the ball and score in the 2nd half.

> NY had a chance to pull off the win but it's tough when a veteran QB like Ben Roethlisberger is in the game.

> Roethlisberger has been in these "win or go home games before" and in waning minutes of the 4th quarter, knew he needed 1 final first down. It wasn't easy, but he got it and it showed how clutch = money = reliable he is in the big games.

Get ready for the Super Bowl in 2 weeks. We'll have lots to chat about before hand. It should be a great game.

NFL Playoffs

Whew! Could you believe the games this past weekend? If you happened to miss them, I'm here to catch you up.

> The heavily favored NE Patriots, seen as an unstoppable team, were soundly beaten by the NY Jets. Yes, the Jets who have driven their fans crazy through the years by not being able to win the big ones. Guess what? This time they did it and it was legit. Gang Green (NY Jets defense) stepped up and so did 2nd year QB Mark Sanchez. They take on the Pittsburgh Steelers next. More on that later.

> The Chicago Bears took the Seattle Seahawks to the woodshed. Jay Cutler was the QB Chicago hoped he'd be: calm in the pocket, nailing his receivers with short and long strikes and even running the ball into the end zone. Seattle was scrappy under Coach Pete Carroll, the most upbeat NFL coach in my opinion. Still, their late scores weren't enough to topple the Bears. Next up for the Bears are the Packers, their arch-rival. You can bet there's more to say on that match-up!

Auburn finishes #1

Auburn won last night's game with Oregon, making Auburn the BCS National College Football Champion. Here's what you can chat up.

> For two prolific offenses, the score was relatively modest: 22 - 19.

> It was a fun game to watch. Oregon unleashed so many trick plays -- some that worked, some that didn't -- that there was never a dull moment.

> Auburn provided a counter to the creative Ducks, utilizing a no-huddle offense at times like Oregon has done throughout the season.

> For me, the difference was the offensive and defensive lines. Auburn's lines were so much bigger that it was clear that they dominated the game.

> And Oregon missed a major opportunity. Auburn stopped them on a goal line stand at 4th and 1, which came back to haunt the Ducks.

National Title Game Tonight

> Both are undefeated.

> Oregon runs a fast-paced offense that rarely huddles after a play, which means they're in tremendous shape.

> Auburn relies on Newton who can run and throw and has engineered some amazing comebacks during this season.

> To me, this could be a toss-up. I think the key to the game is defense. Which team can literally shut down these two stars.

Well, you can't say you weren't warned. There's been more turnover in the coaching ranks.

First, you can chat up what's happening in the college ranks.

+ Rich Rodriguez at the University of Michigan has been fired. The former WV University head coach just couldn't right the ship in Ann Arbor and big time programs like Michigan aren't patient.

+ What were the things that heavily weighed against him? He was there three years and never beat U of M's nemesis Ohio State.

+ He also never beat interstate rival, Michigan State.

+ Getting blown out in the Gator Bowl also didn't help.

Second, in the pro's, 1 coach who seemed to be on the bubble is coming back.

+ Marvin Lewis, the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, is getting an extension after a horrible season.

+ The Bengals won just 4 games and lost 12.

+ Here's the kicker to the story: Lewis negotiated with the Bengals front office and owner Mike Brown to make changes in how the front office runs (source: ESPN).

+ So Lewis may get more input on football operations and facilities. I say, "Go Marvin!" Growing up in Ohio, the Bengals became known as the "Bungles" over the years. This once proud franchise started by Paul Brown, a football legend, deserves some breaks.

No More Favre, NFL Coach Canning

Good Morning,

Time to throw some hot tips on the bbq.

Item #1:

+ Brett Favre says he's retiring. Yes, we've heard this before -- several times in fact over the past 5 years. So, do you think he will? Will he cave again in August and try to latch on with a team? Does he know how to live without the game of football? I think that's one of the biggest issues. When you've played nearly your entire life, it's tough to leave the game behind as well all the comes with it: the camaraderie, the locker room hijinks, the travel and being The Man. This year's been different though: injuries to teammates, a texting scandal, $50K fine and finally injuries that kept him out of the last games of the season. He was football's iron man, 297 consecutive starts. My money is on him retiring.

+ In the next day of so, you'll start to see some NFL coaches get fired. Eric Mangini of the Cleveland Browns has already been let go. Also, pay attention to what happens to interim coaches like Leslie Frazier of the Vikings and Jason Garrett of the Cowboys.

TCU Finishes Unbeaten. What Now?

Happy New Year!

Well, it's happened again.

Today, the #3 ranked college football team won the Rose Bowl. The Horned Frogs from Texas Christian University beat the Wisconsin Badgers to finish the season

13 - 0. Unbeaten. Unbelievable. But they're not in the National Championship Game. That's on January 10th between undefeated Auburn and undefeated Oregon.

Here's what you can chat up:

+ Is the Bowl Championship Series the right way to determine a college football champion?

You could argue both ways but I think it's not Just like in college basketball, there's a tournament with 64 teams and there's only 1 winner. (Clearly, there don't need to be 64 teams in a college football playoff but it's an example that you can use.)

+ In a perfect world (if there is one) should TCU get a shot at the winner of the Oregon/Auburn game? In a perfect world, yes.

+ Here's what I literally dream of: As long as the BCS system is in place and there are more than 2 undefeated teams, play the championship off the radar. Think "Friday Night Lights". Pick a field, strap on the chin guards and play. At the end, there's 1 team standing that's a true national champ and can say, "Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!"

Sure. Right. Never. Will. Happen. But a gal can dream, can't she?

Ron Santo - Tough, Brave and Honest. RIP

Folks,

This is a tough one to write about. Ron Santo, the voice of the Chicago Cubs Baseball Team, has died. He was just 70 years old and had suffered from diabetes for years.

Here's what you can chat up:

+ He was a Cub though and through. A 3rd baseman considered one of the best during his prime, he had a lifetime batting average of .277, 342 home runs and 1331 runs batted in.

+ Regrettably, he never made it into the Hall of Fame, though he came close and probably should have been inducted.

+ He became an announcer with the club and was a admitted "homer" = openly rooting for his team. Listening to him on the radio made you feel like he lived and died with each pitch, hit, run and error. There were times you didn't know what was going on because Ronnie was so over the top because he was caught up in the moment. He just couldn't find the words to tell you what he was seeing!

+ That's passion. That's love. That's who the Cubs and the fans will miss this season. And the next. And the next.

Summer nights spent listening to Ron on the radio often elicited stories from friends of the kind things he did. It also provoked sadness, like in 1998 when it appeared the Cubs were headed to the World Series and the "Bartman Incident" occurred. I remember his near-wail like voice, "no, no, no, no." Another dream, like the Hall of Fame, denied.

For the love of Ron, post some of your favorite memories of him. Let's send him out knowing he was a beloved baseball man.

Wade Phillips Out in Dallas. Reading Between the Lines.

Friends, this is a lesson about sports, business and reading between the lines.

Here's what you have to chat up:

> Today, the Dallas Cowboys fired its head coach, Wade Phillips. The Cowboys are 1 - 7. That's unacceptable for "America's Team".

> His dismissal comes about a week after the owner of the Cowboys, Jerry Jones, said that Phillips would have the job for the remainder of the year. (You really can't say publicly, "Well, if Wade loses the next game, he's gone!"

> Then came the Cowboys' horrific loss to the Green Bay Packers yesterday, 45 - 7. Jones had had enough.

> Ask why Jones would express support for Phillips and then change his mind?

> What factors contributed to Phillips being shown the door? (Here's the answer: injuries to their starting QB Tony Romo, a ridiculous number of penalties, a porous defense and an inability to get the 'boys out of a terrible rut.)

> BTW, some thought the Cowboys could contend for the Super Bowl since they won their division last year. Adding insult to injury, the Super Bowl is being held in Dallas this year, which would be an owner's dream to have his team play that game in their own stadium.

Joe Pa Wins No. 400

Take note. Joe Paterno, the head football coach at Penn State, has just won his 400th game. He's the first coach in major college football history to do that. What that means is Division 1 football.

> His team had to come from behind to win. They were down 21 - 0 in the first half.

> He's 83 years old.

> He's been head coach for 44 seasons.

> He's donated millions to the University.

> He's passed the big names: Bear Bryant of Alabama, Bobby Bowden of Florida State.

> Talk about how he HASN'T passed Eddie Robinson of Grambling. (He is, however, only 9 wins away.)

> He's affectionately known as Joe Pa, which is correctly pronounced Joe-puh, as in Puh-terno.

> Most folks think he IS Penn State.

> Most years, when he loses more than 2 games, people start calling for his head. But not today. Today, Joe Paterno is the Lion King.

Sparky Anderson - the Spark of the Big Red Machine

You can talk up the world series (which the SF Giants won), you can talk up football or you could mention the name Sparky Anderson around the water cooler.

Who? Ah, here's what you can talk about.

> George "Sparky" Anderson was a Hall of Fame major league manager who died today at the age of 76.

> He lead the Cincinnati Reds aka "The Big Red Machine" to World Series wins in 1975 and 1976. As you know, that was no easy task. He had a roster of superstars -- Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Ken Griffey, George Foster, Tony Perez, etc., etc. -- and managed to keep everyone happy.

> The Reds let him go a few years later after two 2nd place finishes.

> What'd Sparky do? Headed to the American League and won ANOTHER championship with the Detroit Tigers.

> He is still among the most highly regarded managers in baseball and one of winningest.

Randy Moss Is Released - Again

Gather 'round friends and lemme tell you what you should be chatting about this afternoon.

Randy Moss, the wide receiver who was released by the NE Patriots several weeks ago and picked up by the Minnesota Vikings has now been released by the Vikings.

+ First thing to say is, "Wow! How did that happen?"

+ Then say, "Well, it's probably because he appeared to bad-mouth both of his head coaches directly to the media."

+ Top it off with, "Isn't it ironic that the Vikings and the Patriots played last night?" BTW, the Patriots won.

Here's what you can also add:

+ Moss is a 7-time pro bowl selection.

+ He's a uniquely talented player.

+ He feels misunderstood. He probably is.

Questions to ask:

+ Will another team claim him off waivers?

+ Are there teams that can take that risk like Dallas, which is 1 - 6 and has lost their starting quarterback?

Monday Morning Watercooler - NFL

Here's what you can chat up tomorrow morning around the office coffee pot:

> Ben Roethlisberger returned to play for the Steelers and had a good game, beating the Cleveland Browns. Ask if you think he showed any signs of rust, nervousness, etc. Do you think he's earning back the respect of his teammates?

> The Dallas Cowboys, often known as America's Team, are now 1-5 losing to the lowly Minnesota Vikings, who are 2-4. Something that you can have people mull over: whether Cowboy Coach Wade Phillips will last the remainder of the season.

> It took overtime (OT) for the NE Patriots to beat the Baltimore Ravens. Are the Ravens that good to push NE to OT or are the Patriots really living up to their 4 -1 record? Reminder: this was the Patriots first game without wide-receiver Randy Moss. They did, however, re-acquire Deion Branch, who spent 4 years with the Seattle Seahawks before returning to NE and he MORE than held his own today.

Fall Ball - Major League Playoffs

So we begin the next round of the Major League Baseball playoffs. A few select boys of summer have managed to make it into the fall. Here's what you can chat up:

+ It's an interesting group, Yankees vs. The Texas Rangers.

+ What you should be saying is, "What? The Texas Rangers made the playoffs much less the American League Championship Series?"

+ Yes, Dorothy, they did. Here's why it's an incredible story. This is the franchise that literally bet the farm on now Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez taking them to the playoffs. Never happened.

+ A-Rod agreed to move on to the Yankees, even switching positions from shortstop to 3rd base.

+ Philly has been here and beyond before. This is a steady team with strength across the board from Ryan Howard, to Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley (altho, not his best year), Cole Hamels and a pitcher who refused to quit, Roy Halladay. More later on him.

+ The Giants have have superb pitching and it starts with Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum.

+ Talk about whether the Giants can match up against the Phillies, who had no trouble sweeping the Cincinnati Reds in their best of 5 series.

Here's the NFL game I'm keeping my eye on today.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Indianapolis Colts. Here's what you can chat up:

> These are teams going different directions.

> The Chiefs won just 10 games in the past 3 seasons. Woah. Not good.

> This season, they are undefeated. In fact, they're the only undefeated team in the NFL.

> Indianapolis has won 1 Super Bowl and contended for another.

> Indianapolis has a losing record.

Talk about why the Colts are having problems. Is it with one of the NFL's best QB's? (Nope, it's not.) He's run a little hot and cold but the reality is, he's clutch. So talk about the Colts' defense and how it's not getting the job done.

Talk up why the Chiefs are doing well this year after YEARS of futility. He made huge changes to the roster. He got players to buy into a team mentality. He has veterans who are helping to lead the charge. BTW, he's got Charlie Weis, former coach at Notre Dame, on his staff. Weis has always earned points as a solid offensive coordinator.

College football

Alabama vs. South Carolina. Alabama is #1 in the polls i.e. the top rated college football team in the country. They're taking on #19 South Carolina. The Crimson Tide of Alabama have been tested and have had to come from behind.

Here's what you can chat up:

> The two coaches, Nick Saban of Alabama and Steve Spurrier of S.C. are crafty football veterans who aren't afraid to mix it up, call trick plays, pull out all the stops to win.

> S.C. is clearly the underdog and here's why: there's a lot of shake-up at the QB position for them.

> 'Bama has a Heisman Trophy winning running back, Mark Ingram. Though he didn't start the season opener due to injury, he make his mark.

> Count on the Tide winning but S.C. could give them a run for their money and an upset is possible.

MLB Playoffs

> Some teams are already down 2 games in the best of 5 series playoffs and it will take a heroic effort to climb back into the playoffs.

> Talk about the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Dusty Baker led the Reds to the top of the Central Division in the NL. But the Reds are now down 2 - 0 against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Reds started strong but then Reds committed 4 errors to lose.

> Talk about why DEFENSE is so important. As Dusty Baker said, we played better but lost the game b/c of the defense.

> The Reds must win the next game to stay in the playoffs.

Big Ben Is Back

You've heard a lot about Ben Roethlisberger. This season, it hasn't been about his performance on the football field.

If you haven't heard, here's the (quick) skinny:

> He was accused of but not charged with sexual assault of a woman at a bar in Georgia.

> He was suspended 6 games by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension was later reduced to 4 games by the NFL Commissioner.

> Roethlisberger returned to the team this week.

Here's what you should be talking about:

> How will he play? He hasn't part of training camp and hasn't practiced with his receivers. Let's just say that timing between players, especially QB's and wide receivers is crucial.

> How will he be greeted by fans? Keep in mind, Pittsburgh is a great, proud sports town. Roethlisberger helped the Steelers win two Super Bowls. That said, lots of locals even my Aunt, one of the most loving and patient people I know (read: nun), thought Ben should be ashamed and should go. Terry Bradshaw, a Hall of Fame QB for the Steelers after winning FOUR Super Bowls, thought Big Ben should have been dumped.

> Has he changed? Is he a better man? Could he even be a better player?

Decide for yourself on October 17th when he is supposed to start against the Steelers' bitter rivals, the Cleveland Browns. It'll be in Pittsburgh and worth watching.

Here's what you should be talking about and why: the New England Patriots trading Randy Moss for a third round draft pick. Moss is a ridiculously-talented wide receiver in the National Football League. He makes ballet-like catches and should be a shoo-in to the Hall of Fame.

Here's what you've GOT to talk up:

> Why did he get traded? NE says it's a business decision and they wish him well. Others will say that he talked too much about his contract, disagreed with coaches and, perhaps, didn't get the ball thrown his way enough. It's telling that he was traded immediately AFTER a VICTORY on Monday Night Football.

> Why trade him back to the team that originally drafted him, the Minnesota Vikings? Well, he's already been there and done that but this time, he's paired with Brett Favre, a legendary quarterback. He WILL be in the NFL Hall of Fame. The Vikings know what they're getting.

> Balance that argument with the fact that Moss was already playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the league, Tom Brady. He will also be in the Hall.

> The manager of the Chicago Cubs, Lou Piniella, is leaving at the end of this year.

> Talk about why he's leaving. He says it's just time. Maybe it is. I've liked Lou from his time playing for the Yankees. He's fiery, competitive and won a World Series when he managed the Reds. He's been around. He's probably ready to be around the house.

> Do you believe him? It's been a tough season for the Cubs who were expected to contend in some fashion. Instead, the #1 pitcher Carlos Zambrano had a meltdown, went to the bullpen, had another meltdown and underwent a suspension and is working his way back up from the minors.

> Perhaps you can say, "Maybe Lou just had enough." And see what kind of reaction you get.

Who will replace him?

> Joe Torre, formerly of the Yankees and currently with the Dodgers, isn't ruling anything out.

> Ryne Sandberg, currently the manager of the Cubs AAA team and a Hall of Fame 2nd baseman for the Cubs, is VERY interested.

> It's also believed that Bob Brenly, who lead the AZ Diamondbacks to a World Series and is currently a Cubs announcer, says he's interested.

Next, Bobby Cox, the manager of the Atlanta Braves is retiring at season's end.

> He's the legendary manager who has lead the Braves from the outhouse to the penthouse (bottom to top) of the division and won a World Series.

Red Sox Honor Steinbrenner

In the end, my friends, it's more than a game. Life is much, much bigger than any game. Last night, the Boston Red Sox proved that.

The Sox paid tribute to George Steinbrenner and former Yankees announcer Bob Sheppard last night at Boston's Fenway Park. If you don't know anything about sports, know this: it would be the equivalent of the Buffalo Bills (4 time losers in the Super Bowl) feting the teams that vanquished them.

The Yankees and the Red Sox are not friends. Maybe not as bitter rivals as in past years but darn close. The Red Sox kvetched that the Yankees out-spended them and stole players and the Yankees thought that keeping the Red Sox from reaching the World Series, was their job. Steinbrenner and the president of the Red Sox swapped some seriously verbal jabs. It wasn't pretty.

But yesterday, it was beautiful in Boston. There were no more hard feelings. The Red Sox held a moment of silence to salute The Boss and then fans actually clapped for him. They also acknowledged Bob Sheppard, the longtime announcer at Yankee Stadium who died this week at the age of 99.

Kudos to the Red Sox organization and their fans for the tribute. Pure class. They knew the past was over and it was time to salute two men who made amazing contributions to the game of baseball and who lifted the community at large. Life is bigger than any game. The Red Sox proved that last night. Well done.

> Nicknamed "The Boss", Steinbrenner bought a struggling franchise in 1973 and restored it to glory, winning seven World Series titles. How? He spent TONS of money acquiring top talent.

> He and his staff put together a great development program in the minors that produced Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte and many more.

So, it's over. LeBron James is going to the Miami Heat. Here's what you can chat up Friday at the watercooler:

> What's the upside of him going to the Miami Heat? Yes, they'll be instant NBA title contenders.

It will be amazing to see LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh together on the same court every night.

> Downside? Never count out injuries. If LeBron and Dwyane or Bosh go down, the Heat don't yet have the bench power to replace them. The Heat will likely have salary cap issues so they'll have lots of players who have been signed at the minimum.

> LeBron will have to share the spotlight with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Let's be clear, this is Dwyane Wade's team. He lead them to an NBA title in 2006. Is sharing the spotlight and the ball and the plays possible? Will he want to share the money?

> How does this bode for Cleveland? Not great. This is a city that's taken it on the chin.

In the end, it's a loss for Cleveland, Chicago, the Knicks, the Nets and the Clippers. But Miami? They'll party on tonight.

Big happenin's in the world of sports:

Tennis at Wimbledon

> This is the tennis tournament that is often considered the most prestigious. It's at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The Queen and royalty show up. People eat strawberries and cream. Players can only wear clothing that is more white in color than not. Anyway...enough with the formalities.

Here's why Wimbledon has been epic this year:

> The longest tennis match ever recorded happened here this year. Nicolas Mahut and John Isner slugged it out for 183 games over the course of 11 hours and 5 minutes. Folks, this was a first round match! These guys were playing tennis for 11 hours. A marathon lasts 2 - 5 hours. Amazing stuff. Talk that up!

> Upsets: the US's Andy Roddick is out as is Venus Williams, who's won the women's title 5 times there. Serena Williams and Roger Federer keep rolling as does Spain's Rafael Nadal. Talk up what another clash between those two rivals, Federer and Nadal, would mean. Last year was an epic showdown!

Baseball

> Carlos Zambrano of the Cubs unleashed a tirade in the Cubs dugout last week. One target - first baseman, Derek Lee, who Zambrano didn't think hustled enough that inning. Zambrano was after for 4 runs in the first inning against the White Sox, their crosstown rival . The Cub's manager pulled him from the game immediately and the GM immediately suspended him.

> Zambrano has NOT had a good year. He's started the season as the Cub's ace and ended up being demoted to the bullpen after a few starts.

> Zambrano is going into treatment and will be placed on a restrictive list, meaning he's no longer suspended.

> Talk about the impact of Zambrano's behavior. How does it impact the team? Can they rally in the second half of the season despite him? Can he ever come back and be accepted? Would you trust him as a teammate? Stay tuned. This one will be interesting.

World Cup

> The U.S. lost a heartbreaker to Ghana on Saturday so they're out of the Cup.

> However, there are big surprises. Italy, the defending champ, was upset. Japan and Paraguay have been (as ESPN puts it) overachievers. They're each hoping to get into the quarterfinal round (top four spots) for the first time.

NBA Draft, World Cup

Hello friends,

The NBA draft is tonight. That kicks off our list of what you can chat up:

+ The player who will likely go #1 is John Wall, from the University of Kentucky.

+ Talk about why he's going #1. He played only one year of college basketball but he already has the skill set of an NBA player.

+ In 1 season of college ball, he made first team All-American.

+ He's versatile, has a soft shooting touch and displays great athleticism on the court. i.e. He gets it done and isn't afraid to drive into the paint. (Paint = the rectangular area of the basketball court that leads to the basket. It's where the "big men" - centers and forwards - play so you've got to have agility to avoid them and/or bulk to match up against them.)

Now, World Cup:

+ Italy, the reigning World Cup champ, is O-U-T.

+ The U.S. survives to the next round. Pretty amazing given some of the "cardiac moments" they've provided so far, like coming back from 2-0 to win a match and the ties they've endured when goals have been nullified.

+ So the World Cup is offering upsets, emotion and patriotism equivalent to (or even surpassing) the Olympics.

+ Dial it up. Watch it. I dare ya.

Why?

> This is a chance to watch some of the world's best athletes. These guys have endurance, poise, body control, speed, finesse and move and nearly all of them don't use their hands!

Seriously. Drop by a local watering hole, order a pint or a soda, ask the bartender to turn on the games and start chatting about the Cup. I dare ya :)

Tom Izzo Stays at Michigan State, Voting with His Heart

Got to chat up Tom Izzo today. Here's the deal:

> He's the head basketball coach at Michigan State University. He's won National Championships and he's coached some great players.

> He had the chance to become head coach of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers. You know, the team that is waiting to hear whether their superstar, LeBron James, is going to stay or head to another team.

> He had the chance to make $6M (yup) a year with Cleveland. He already makes $3M with Michigan State.

My feeling? Great for him, Michigan State and College Basketball. Why?

> He voted with his heart. He forms connections with his players. LeBron wouldn't meet with Izzo during the interview process. Nope. No connection. Not from the start. Izzo said that was a factor.

> He pledged his allegiance to staying at Michigan State for life. I believe him. I can't say that of all NCAA coaches but I believe Izzo.

> He knows that he can make a difference in the college players' lives. Probably won't happen in the NBA.

> You know what else I loved? Izzo went through the process and, I hope, came out the same guy on the other side. He also realized that this decision was about life, not $.

> Detroit Pitcher Armando Galarraga had a perfect game going the other night. 2 outs in the 9th inning and umpire Jim Joyce missed a routine call on a ground out. The batter was out by a full step but Joyce blew it. On replay video, it's not even close.

Ken Griffey, Jr. - The Kid Leaves the Field

First, a quick tip of the hat to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. The Flyers climbed back into contention last night, winning game 3. It's Blackhawks 2, Flyers 1. Here's what you can talk up:

> Do the Flyers have the big "mo" - momentum - coming into game 4? (Yup, and the Hawks have to thump it out of them.)

> What do the Hawks have to do? Skate like they own the place and don't let down. Last night, the Flyers scored back to back goals in less than 2 minutes, a feat that the Hawks pulled off on Monday. Chicago's a lean, young and hungry team. They've got to come out big in game 4 tomorrow night.

Next, the Kid leaves the field.

40-year-old Ken Griffey, Jr. of the Seattle Mariners retired yesterday. To some, it was surprising that he even joined the team this season. He was last seen being carried off Seattle's Safeco Field.

Here's why you should care and what you can talk about:

> "The Kid" brought joy to baseball. At the height of his career, he was considered the best player in baseball. He roamed centerfield and made eye-popping, wall-crashing, wall-climbing Sportscenter-featured catches. He was The Kid and The Man all rolled into one.

> He had one of the sweetest swings in baseball. Still does; it just lost its pop.

> He ends his career with 630 home runs but early on, he was on track to break Hank Aaron's HR record, before Barry Bonds started pounding homers late in his career. Griffey's body broke down preventing him from catching Bonds but here's what he didn't do: he didn't juice (i.e. take steroids.)

> He was a players' player. He loved the game. Perhaps because he grew up in a baseball family. His Dad, Ken Griffey, played in the bigs for the Reds and Mariners so Junior grew up in the clubhouse.

> Why'd he leave? He loved his teammates, the game and didn't want to be a distraction. Unfortunately, he did become one. Recently, reports surfaced that when called to pinch hit in a game, he was asleep in the clubhouse. True or not, the deal was done.

Hope that you all had a great Memorial Day weekend that you took time to honor soldiers who serve, served and died.

This is a FABULOUS time of year. It's all about the FINALS for the NBA and the NHL. There are some great story lines that you can chat up.

NBA

> The Lakers and the Celtics are in the best of 7 NBA Finals. The Lakers have Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Derek Fisher, Lamar Odom and a lot of history on their side. This team won the Championship last year and is looking to repeat. What are their chances?

> Kobe Bryant is peaking at the right time. He's been injured but turned on the jets and played like the Kobe of old. Can anyone shut him down?

> Boston is lead by -- and some won't believe this -- by Rajon Rondo, the Celtics point guard.

> Yes, the Celtics have the big three: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen but this season it's Rondo who makes the Celtics go-go. Talk about how he managed to outplay LeBron James in the series against Cleveland and how he's vaulted to the top of his game. (Some hints: maturity, a new contract and a willingness to work and play harder than ever.)

NHL

> It's the Chicago Blackhawks vs. the Philadelphia Flyers.

> The Blackhawks are up 2 games to 0 and have a chance to put the Flyers on their heels tomorrow night with a win.

> Talk about how the Blackhawks have turned it around from being a bottom-dweller and lowly franchise to being within 2 games of clinching Lord Stanley's Cup. (Yes, that's the trophy ;) (One hint: Rocky Wirtz, the new Blackhawks owner who took over when his father died a few years back. He's energized the franchise and brought fans back to the rink.)

> What do the Flyers have to do to stop the 'Hawks? Better defense and find a way to break through Antti Niemi's fortress. The 'Hawks goalie has been on fire.

The NFL announced today that the 2014 Super Bowl will be held in...New Jersey. Yup. I said it. The NFC and AFC champs will play in the new OPEN AIR Meadowlands Stadium. ESPN: "It will be the first open-air stadium in a cold-weather region to host a Super Bowl."

Today, start your sports conversations with, WHY? Then move onto, WHAT IMPACT WILL THIS HAVE? IS THIS GOOD HISTORY THAT THE NFL IS MAKING? DO YOU WANT TO SEE A SNOW BOWL (not unlike a torrential rain in Miami a few years back when the Colts clobbered the Bears in the Super Bowl.)

NBA Lottery, NHL Playoff

Evenin',

Let's cut to the chase. The NBA is holding its draft lottery tonight. That's when teams who missed the playoffs last year participate in a drawing to determine the draft order for the next draft. Without going into too much detail, there's more to it like a weighted system that gives teams with a worst record a greater chance of getting the #1 pick.

Here's what you can chat about:

> Who and what is at stake? Well, University of Kentucky freshman John Wall is widely considered the first pick. Who's considered a close second? Evan Turner from The Ohio State University.

> How have former #1's turned out? Some have been amazing. (see Dwight Howard and LeBron James). Others have been busts (see: Kwame Brown and Michael Olowokandi).

NHL playoffs are back tonight. The Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks are back on the ice tonight. Chicago slipped by the Sharks on Sunday on foreign ice, snatching home ice advantage. Starlin Castro and I'm baaaaaack

I plead temporary fatigue. I'll even plead the 5th. I'll also beg for forgiveness for leaving you hanging over the past 3 months. The flame for the KQ Sports BBQ was unexpectedly doused but, thanks to the briquettes and heavy duty lighter fluid, I'm back.

What's with the sudden return? A trip to the Friendly Confines.

I had the great fortune of being invited last night to the Cubs vs. Marlins game. This was the first home game for the Cubs' SS Starlin Castro. He had an impressive start last week, homering in his first major league at bat. A true rookie and just 20 years old, he enthralled fans with his glove, his range and his swing.

Then came last night. Castro not only committed 3 errors, he made a mistake that no ball player should ever make: he stopped working hard. After he botched an 8th-inning ground ball, instead of hustling to where the ball skidded to, he turned his back and slowly walked toward it. Hanley Ramirez caught Castro napping and made it safely to 2nd base.

Don't get me wrong; Castro had a bad night. He should shake it off. I'm just hoping he's not going to be "that" guy. Don't be the player who only hustles when things are going your way, like last week. Do be "the guy" who learns from last night and promises long-suffering Cubs fans that it won't happen again. Be the guy who accepts help, constructive input from his teammates and a manager's scolding and channels it to be a better player.

Starlin's a great player to watch. Especially when he's working his butt off.

Big shout out to my beloved sister in law who gave me the idea for today's blog topic.

Here's what you can chat up:

> This weekend's Super Bowl (which is the game between the champion of the AFC vs. the NFC conferences) features two of the game's best quarterbacks, sportsmen and citizens.

> Peyton Manning is the son of former Saints QB Archie Manning. The family grew up New Orleans and grew up, of course, pulling for the Saints. Now, the entire Manning clan is pulling for the Colts. Not unexpected but not without some friction.

> Peyton is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. He's won the league MVP 4 times, which is a record. He's also a good citizen, quietly donating money to charities and has his own foundation. He also has the reputation for being a gentlemen; there's no 'I' when he talks about the Colts. It's always presented as, "We". He's a superstar but he doesn't feel the need to say that.

> Drew Brees is also a stellar QB. A Texas-raised gunslinger who went to Purdue. Some people didn't think he'd do well in the NFL because he's smaller than a lot of QBs (including Manning) but he proved them wrong.

> The San Diego Chargers drafted him but opted to let him go in order to allow Philip Rivers to play. Drew took it like a man and had his choice of teams including the Dolphins but ultimately chose the Saints.

> With his leadership, focus and discipline, he's helped get them into the Super Bowl.

> He's also a great citizen, pouring his heart and money into New Orleans. He's proud to play there, loves the people and they love him right back. Oh, and he gives a lot of $ to Purdue as well.

> Both Peyton and Drew are going to received very BIG raises. I hope they'll both continue to give big(ger) as a result.

I don't care who you cheer for this Sunday or if you don't care about the game. But care about these guys (and other good men in sports) because they carry themselves the way champions should.

Today's news is from the NFL, where Kurt Warner, the QB of the Arizona Cardinals, announced his retirement. Here's what you can talk about:

> Will he make it into the Hall of Fame?

> There are arguments on both sides. He won 1 Super Bowl, 2 MVP awards, went to the Pro Bowl 4 times, is the fastest player to reach 10,000 passing yards, ended with more than 30,000 passing yards and completed 65%+ of his passes.

> Between 2002 and 2007, he had injuries, was dropped by the Los Angeles Rams, traded to the Giants where he was replaced by Eli Manning. Those years, for some, are reasons for him NOT to be in the hall.

> He spent 12 years in the league but has one of the most unlikely (and true) stories in all of sports. He played in the Arena Football League, in NFL Europe and, in between, worked as a stock boy at a Hyvee grocery store before actually playing in the NFL.

Vikings vs. Saints, We're Going to Overtime!

What a game! In the NFC Championship game, the Saints and Vikings end the game tied at 28 each so they go to overtime = sudden death. First team to score wins. (For more, see earlier posting this month for the difference between OT in college and pro football.)

This game has had its share of turnovers, which are never good but Brett Favre was picked off (intercepted) with just 2 minutes to go in the game and the Vikings were marching toward a score.

Now the Saints are on the move and face a crucial 4th and inches.

Whoever wins this game will take on the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl.

Kentucky Stays Perfect, Big Game Sunday

Good morning,

The University of Kentucky stayed perfect in their basketball season but Texas fell to UConn, which was without Coach Jim Calhoun who is out by doctor's orders. Watch the rankings this week. It will be interesting to see how things shake out.

Next up, today's NFC and AFC championship games. Many pundits are picking the Vikings to beat the Saints and the Colts to beat the Jets. Talk about the potential upsets here. If the Jets upset the Colts, that will be HUGE! The Jets just squeaked into the playoffs but they have an outstanding defense and a very defensive minded coach. If they shut down the Colts passing game, it's going to be a tough game for the Colts to win b/c Indy doesn't have a strong running game.

AFC and NFC Championships, College Basketball

Good morning!

Two things to chat about today: NFL football and college basketball.

NFL is up first:

> The New Orleans Saints take on the Minnesota Vikings. Both teams have outstanding offenses and can score well. New Orleans QB Drew Brees is considered a hero in The Big Easy but he's taking on Vikings QB Brett Favre (Farve), who grew up 50 miles away in Mississippi. This one comes down to defense: who can shut down these two QB's and their running games.

> The Indianapolis Colts take on the NY Jets. The Jets nearly didn't make the playoffs but they have a rookie QB, Mark Sanchez, who is playing like he was at the beginning of the season, meaning he's knockin' their socks off! The key here is also defense. Can the Jets shut down Colts QB Peyton Manning (te first 4 time winner of NFL player of the year) and his passing game? The Colts don't have much of a running game so they're only using the run to set up the pass. And the Jets have the best run defense in the league.

Now to college basketball, which has a new team at number one.

> The Kentucky Wildcats are undefeated at 18 and 0. They replace Texas, which lost for the first time this week. The Wildcats are coached by the controversial John Calipari. And they're lead by a freshman, John Wall. Wall is so smooth, so poised, so well versed that he looks like he could play in the NBA tomorrow and not miss a beat. Kentucky plays Arkansas this weekend. Look for Big Blue to pull another one off.

> Kansas is ranked number 2 and is the only unbeaten team in the Big 12. They play their next 3 on the road so look for whether Kansas can hang tough during this stretch.

> USC's head football coach, Pete Carroll, is leaving USC for the pros. (You may remember I talked about him a few months ago and why he's a great college coach.) He's decided that he wants the challenge of the NFL.

> This is not his first trip to the pros. Why is he going now?

> Be prepared for the answer: that he's running to Seattle because the NCAA is investigating USC for infractions.

> Will Carroll be successful? He wasn't his first time around in the pros. There's talk that Carroll is being given more control over football operations, which means he gets more credit -- and more blame -- with the team's outcome.

> Be ready for people who say Carroll is bolting when the team needs him the most. For the first time in 7 or 8 years, the team is facing an uphill battle. Carroll won 2 national championships and 7 conference titles while at USC but his team fell down this year and didn't win the league and didn't go to the Rose Bowl.

Sudden Death vs. Overtime

In light of today's NFL overtime game between the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals, I thought it might be helpful to define the difference between overtime in college football and the pros.

> In college football, when teams are tied at the end of regulation play, each team is given a chance to score. The ball is put on the opponent's 25 yard line and, just like regular play, they have four downs in order get 10 yards and a first down or to score. Each team has an equal number of chances to score. The one that outlasts the other wins.

> In the NFL, teams tied at the end of regulation go to sudden death, meaning whoever scores first wins. That's why the team that wins the coin toss at the end of regulation is in the BEST position to control their fate. Score and go home.

It's NFL playoff time. Today it's the NY Jets vs. The Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. Here's what you can chat up:

> The Bengals haven't won a playoff game in 19 years and only played 2 playoff games in that time. It's the longest drought in the league. This franchise fell on very hard times and is starting to come back.

> The Bengals QB Carson Palmer has a bad left thumb. He's not even handing off with that hand so will he be able play well enough for the Bengals to win?

> Will the Jet's rookie QB Mark Sanchez be able to handle the pressure of an NFL playoff game?

With the Cowboys / Eagles game:

> The Cowboys shellacked the Eagles just a week ago. How will they bounce back?

> Will Eagles coach Andy Reid go with a more balanced attack, meaning mixing up a running and passing game, in order to keep the Cowboys defense guessing.

> The Eagles QB Donovan McNabb has to direct this team. He's the go to guy. He needs to corral his team, take charge and be the one who will rally them.

Alabama vs. Texas, Baseball HOF, BBQ Round Up

Good afternoon,

Well, if you haven't heard me mention is often enough, tonight is college football's championship game. It's the BCS title game. BCS = Bowl Championship Series.

Here's what you can chat up (in addition to what I've posted previously):

> Alabama's head coach, Nick Saban (SAY-bin), has coached in the NFL so he's familiar with throwing different looks at teams. He'll do his best to rattle Texas and its quarterback, Colt McCoy.

> Both teams have had close calls this season but they've managed to enter this game undefeated.

> Talk about what Texas has to do to win this game. Hint: they're the underdog so I believe they're going to have to come out and score on Alabama right away to make a statement. If they can limit their own turnovers while creating some, they'll stand a chance against the Tide.

Yesterday, the Baseball Hall of Fame welcomed Andre Dawson (finally!) of the Chicago Cubs and Montreal Expos, Manager Whitey Herzog and Umpire Doug Harvey. Here's what you chat up:

> Who didn't in: Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, Bert Blyleven, Jack Morris and Edgar Martinez.

> In my opinion, Alomar should have made it. He hit .300 over 17 seasons, was a 10-time Gold Glove winner and was an MVP. In his first time on the ballot, however, he fell just 8 votes short. Some suspect that there are some who harbor hard feelings from 1996 when Alomar spit in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck. It was an ugly incident but Hirschbeck forgave Alomar.

> Talk about when Alomar and the others might make it in, including Bert Blyleven, who needs just 5 more votes.

A few hot treats off the BBQ:

> In the NBA, the Commissioner has indefinitely suspended without pay Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards for pulling a gun on a teammate inside the Wizards' locker room. (No tip needed here. You can fill in what to talk about !)

> In the NFL, the Bears are keeping coach Lovie Smith but fired 6 of his coaches. A bit east of there in Cleveland, Eric Mangini is keeping his job with the Cleveland Browns after a disastrous season.

College Football Bowl Games dominate the grill today. I'm not going to list all of them but here are some key match ups:

> The Outback Bowl: Northwestern vs. Auburn. Two tough teams who are fighters to the end.

> Gator Bowl: Florida St. vs. West Virginia. This is Bobby Bowden's last game at Florida State. Look for an emotional response from the FSU team.

> Capital One Bowl: Penn State vs. LSU. The surface at the stadium in Orlando is in question. Two traditionally great football teams square off. Get the remote ready!

> Valero Energy Alamo Bowl: Michigan State vs. Texas Tech. Tech is without their head coach, Mike Leach, who was fired a few days ago. Could be a game changer.

>The Rose Bowl: The Granddaddy of them all. Ohio State vs. Oregon. Must see game b/c of two unbelievably athletic QB's - Terrelle Pryor and Jeremiah Masoli.

> The Allstate Sugar Bowl: The undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats who's head coach headed to Notre Dame, get a chance to prove they are among college football's elite. They take on the Florida Gators, who suffered one loss this year. This will be a telling game for both teams.

Happy New Year's Everyone!

Today, as promised, a guest blogger takes the helm at the Sports BBQ.

Let me introduce Marc, a friend since about third or fourth grade (as I recall, he was a GREAT kickball player), a true sports hound (which, I truly heart) and knower of all things hockey.

So, hot off the grill today is what's sizzlin' on the ice tomorrow. Hope you have a happy and safe New Year's Eve and a prosperous, blessed New Year!

Tomorrow is a big day in the hockey world. Once a year, the NHL takes the game back to where is got its start, outside.

Most of the players on the ice were raised with skates on their feet and a huge part of that was going out on a cold winters day for a game of shinny on a frozen pond or river. Now, the NHL has come out of its shell and come up with a great idea to get more people to watch their game, even if it is only for one day.

The tradition started in 2003 as my favorite team, the Montreal Canadiens, traveled to the wilds of Edmonton to play the Oilers in Commonwealth Stadium. The outdoor game was renewed in 2008 as Pittsburgh traveled to Buffalo and, again, last season as venerable Wrigley Field hosted the Hawks and the Red Wings.

Now it is Fenway Park's turn as the Boston Bruins take on the Philadelphia Flyers. Players to watch on both teams:

> Philadelphia's leading scorer Mike Richards

> future Hall of Famer defenseman Chris Pronger

> goalie Brian Boucher

> Boston's Patrice Bergeron, 6' 9" Zdeno Chara

> goalie Tim Thomas.

Both teams started the year slowly, but now each hold a playoff spot going into the New Year.

> One of the more interesting items of the game is the team's jerseys. As has been the case in the past, the teams have decided to honor their past by wearing jerseys, or sweaters as they used to be called, representing each team's past.

> So if you want to see hockey as it was meant to be played, catch the game tomorrow at 1pm on NBC.

First Woman to Ref College Bowl Game

A little known fact has been sizzling on the hot BBQ and it's time to plate it.

Here's what you can chat up:

> Sarah Thomas is the first woman to referee a college football football game. She's ref'ed other college games and a practice for the New Orleans Saints but this is another barrier broken when she was the line judge for the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl between Ohio University and Marshall University.

> Ria Cortesio was the first female to ump an MLB game -- though it was an exhibition game.

> There aren't a lot of women refs in the pro leagues. Violet Palmer is one.

> David Stern, the NBA commissioner recently responded to a question that in the next decade it's possible a woman could be playing in the league.

So often, I've talked about sports that are male dominated and, I'll continue to. But today, it's time to acknowledge the accomplishments of a few women. And in the future, I'll be finding more stories and bringing some guest bloggers in.

> Jim Caldwell decided to yank Manning when the Colts held a 5 point lead. Why? Well, rest is one thing.

> The farther a successful team heads into the season -- and the Colts have had a GREAT season -- do you start to rest players so they are fresh for the playoffs?

> Some say yes; others no. But to NOT take a shot at an undefeated season...well, that's something to get people's opinions on.

> My two cents: keep the undefeated season alive. This was not a game that the Colts had in the bag and that it made sense to have Curtis Painter come into the game.

> It's also the classic "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

> The Indianapolis Colts suffered their first regular season defeat today. That means NO team in the NFL will be undefeated this year.

> The Colts have had several games this season in which they've had to come from behind in the last minutes to win. They've always rallied until today.

> Talk about what it means that the Colts lost. Yes, they've still won their division and have home field advantage in the playoffs, but does this loss show their vulnerabilities against a mediocre team?

> What do the Colts need to do next week to put this loss behind them? (I say they've got to dominate. Look at what happened to New Orleans after their loss last week. They lost today to a lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneer team.)

Second course: Urban Meyer is quitting as the head football coach at the University of Florida. Wait, no he's not leaving. He's just taking a leave of absence.

> Talk about how Meyer's alleged change of plans impacts his team as they prep for their bowl game.

> Most college and pro coaches work year round, rarely taking days off. If they're not recruiting, they're developing game plans, prepping for opponents, scouting, etc.

> Meyer was hospitalized after the SEC championship game against Alabama. Today, he reportedly said that he had always put football first. Now, it was time to put his health and family first.

> Why is it hard for Meyer to walk away?

> If he does leave, will he coach again? Where? Meyer was a leading candidate for the Notre Dame job.

George Michael, The Sports Machine

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Sports BBQ.

Today, we mark the sad passing of an amazing sports journalist. George Michael, a talented storyteller who manned The Sports Machine died Wenesday. Washington, DC area viewers knew him well from his nightly sportscasts at WRC-TV, channel 4. However, I got to know George through his nationally aired program TSM.

George was a talented storyteller who knew how to find a good story. He knew the questions to ask and he was never shy about his opinions. His trademark line, "Let's go to..." and then he'd name the place or the city and hit the big PLAY button on the videotape machine that was part of his set, became part of many sportscasters vernacular.

He oozed passion. How many of us can say that about our jobs? He made me realize that great storytelling isn't differentiated by news, politics or sports. Give George a political story and he'd weave an incredible narrative. It just so happened that sports was his sweet spot. Maybe that's why I liked him and his style so much.

Thanks, George. I'll always remember you.

> This is huge! Notice that it didn't go to the Heisman winner, which is almost always awarded to an offensive player.

> He has won 4 other awards (bear with me...these names are worth tossing around): the Outland Trophy, the Nagurski (nuh-GER-ski), the Bednarik (bed-NAR-ick) and the Lombardi Trophies. Essentially, these four awards are given to the best defensive player and best lineman. In other words, Suh was a clean sweep.

Apologies for the blog silence; I've been spinning a few plates but I'm I'm firing up the BBQ again.

Instead of 1 massive post, I'm going to spread them out a bit.

Today's comment is on the outcome of the Heisman voting:

> Mark Ingram from University of Alabama won. Something you can talk about is whether he was the best player this year. As my pal, Marc, pointed out, his stats were not as good as Toby Gerhart's from Stanford. Additionally, Ingram had a terrible game against Auburn earlier in the season. It clearly didn't hurt him when it came to voting.

> Sometimes a player's last game makes the biggest impression and Ingram had a good one against Florida in the SEC championship game. Also, many believe that the SEC is one of if not the toughest conferences in college football. Right or wrong, these things absolutely influence those casting the ballots.

> Who casts the ballots? Sports journalists from six different regions around the country (and there are concerns that East Coast voters don't get the same exposure to West Coast teams, thus the alleged "West Coast bias".) Also, former Heisman winners each get a vote.

Good morning,

Recently a Sports BBQ fan asked about boxing and whether the BBQ would ever chat about it. I can't say that I'm a huge fan of the sport. However, there was a match recently that's worth talking about.

Here's what you can chat about:

> Roy Jones, Jr. is a legendary boxer. He's won championships in four different weight class divisions.

> He's 40 years old and is still fighting at a time when a lot of boxers have hung up their gloves.

> However, he suffered a crushing and somewhat surprising defeat the other night when he was going against Danny Green. Jones was in search of a title in a 5th weight division.

> Green needed only 122 SECONDS to beat Jones. In boxing, each round is 3 minutes long so Green handled Jones in just over 2 minutes.

> It was a TKO = Technical Knock Out. The referee jumped in to stop the fight. Jones wasn't knocked out cold but the ref determined that the fight needed to be stopped after Green landed a punch to Jones' head and then followed with more pummeling.

> He is, however, colorful, a character and a showman. In his prime, there wasn't anybody like him. He enjoyed the spotlight.

I just can't help myself. I'm going to write about Notre Dame but I'm going to give this a new twist. By now you know that Charlie Weis, the head football coach, was fired.

Here's what you can chat up:

> The last time Notre Dame won a national championship was 1988 with Lou Holtz. That's a very long drought for a program that expects to compete for a national title EVERY year.

> ND is one of the last few independent football teams, meaning they're not in a league like the Big 10 or the Pac 10, SEC, etc.

> For whatever reason, the combination of players, execution and coaching just didn't work for Weis at Notre Dame. And, by the way, that's not all his fault.

> His firing doesn't mean Weis won't be successful elsewhere. For crying out loud, he has 4 Super Bowl rings from his time in the NFL. But perhaps he's just not a COLLEGE coach. (I've been wrong before but it's a viable theory even though he graduated from ND.)

> You know who wasn't a successful NFL HEAD COACH? Pete Carroll. He was the head coach for the NY Jets and the New England Patriots and was fired from both. Now, Carroll is the head coach at the University of Southern California and he's won a pair of national titles. Carroll is the PERFECT college coach. He loves the whole atmosphere, the recruiting, the legend, the lore, the spectacle that is USC football. And he's authentic; on game day, you can tell there's nowhere else that Pete Carroll wants to be than walking the sideline at the Coliseum. He's also among the smartest, move innovative coaches in the game.

> If ND wants to win, that's the type of coach they need. Truly, nothing against Charlie Weis. It just didn't work. He'll win again.

Slang Sunday

Hello friends,

Today is Slang Sunday. So, here's the phrase of the day: the pocket.

In football, when the quarterback drops back to pass, the offensive line -- the center, guards and tackles -- is blocking the defense. The defensive line pushes forward, the offensive line is pushing back and holding them at bay. As that happens a "pocket" is usually formed, which allows the QB protection and, at times, they can even step into it. So the pocket can = protection.

> Albert Pujols (POOL-hols), the St. Louis Cardinals first baseman, won for the National League for the second consecutive year. He's a power slugger and man, they don't come much better. He was a unanimous winner, receiving all 32 first place votes. He lead the NL with 47 home runs (and other categories) and was third in batting average.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm throwing the turkey on the BBQ today.

Apologies for the delay in posting. I had to get ready for the family so, you are owed two tips. Here we go:

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

> Chat up who is going to be Notre Dame's next football coach. The signs are on the wall that Charlie Weis is going to be fired after Saturday's final game against Stanford. Here's why people are pretty sure: instead of staying in California to recruit players for next year, Weis will be traveling back to South Bend with the team. Some names being floated are Jim Harbaugh (head coach at Stanford) and Brian Kelly (head coach at undefeated Cincinnati).

PRO FOOTBALL

> 3 NFL games are on the Thanksgiving slate. The Thanksgiving perennials are the Lions and the Cowboys. (They're not playing each other.) So, today here's what's on the slate: The Green Bay Packers vs. the Detroit Lions, The Oakland Raiders vs. The Dallas Cowboys, NY Giants vs. The Denver Broncos. Anything can happen on Thanksgiving Day (besides overeating, not being able to button your pants and a touch game of football). The Lions could beat the Packers, the Raiders could upset the Cowboys and the Giants could whip the Broncos. (Perhaps not likely but it's possible!)

Catches: College vs. The Pros

Evenin' friends,

Tonight, we're talking about what's considered a catch in college vs. pro football. Specifically, if a player is thrown a pass that's taking them out of bounds on the field or in the end zone, there are different rules for college football vs. professional football. I raise this because often you see receivers tip-toeing down a sideline or in the end zone while catching a pass and their ballet-like movements make all the difference.

Here are the hot tips:

> In college football, the player must have control of the ball and have just 1 foot in bounds for a catch to qualify.

> For the pros, it's tougher: the player must have control of the ball and BOTH feet must be in bounds for a catch to qualify.

> This is why you see players drag their feet and make some of the most beautiful, aerobatic catches all in the name of staying in bounds and hauling in the ball.
