Hat Tip

Hello,

This morning, the BBQ offers a quick hat tip to Bobby Bowden, the legendary head football coach at Florida State University.

Here's what you can chat about:
> Bowden retired yesterday as the 2nd winningest college football coach in history with 388 wins. He trails only Joe Paterno of Penn State.
> He won two national championships and coached many players who made it into the NFL including Deion Sanders and Charlie Ward.
> His program was not without controversy. His teams were penalized by the NCAA, the governing body in sports.
> He is, however, colorful, a character and a showman. In his prime, there wasn't anybody like him. He enjoyed the spotlight.

Enjoy!

This comment is off-topic but speaks to the last point about colorful characters. Ron Artest, currently with the LA Lakers, admitted that he drank alcohol during games while with the Bulls because, well, they lost so much. Apparently, he liked to enjoy some Hennessey during halftimes. The question is: is this unusual? are there other players legendary for similar activities?

Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle were known to play with hangovers and with their late night proclivities they may have played a few games under the influence. Major League clubhouses used to supply beers for the players after game but I'm not sure if they did in between doubleheaders. There is a great video going around of Dock Ellis and his no hitter while under the influence of LSD.
The NBA is just a different breed. It wouldn't surprise me if many played the game while high.

Marc— That Dock Ellis animation is great. Amazing that the guy threw a no-no while on a trip. I imagine that there is a great video to be made about Darryl Dawkins' mental state during every game he played in the League. I'll never forget the few seasons that the starship from planet Lovetron landed in Detroit.
